There are some disadvantages of ecommerce that you should be
aware of before deciding to embark on opening up an online store or
shopping in one. Even though ecommerce can open doors to a global
market, it can also add more competitors to your niche. You niche may do
well in a local market, but globally it could be a different story.
Ecommerce is also very reliant on third party firms. If Google drops your website in rank a few notches it could make a big difference for you financially. Also your customers are just a mouse click away. You cannot literally see them as they come and go. It is much harder to have influence with your customers when you trade through ecommerce.
Ecommerce also lacks the personal touch that you get out in the market place. This may not matter to some, but to some it does. It is a very impersonal way of trading goods. It sometimes takes a while to get what you ordered online as well. If you go to a store locally you can come right home with your purchase. With ecommerce the earliest you can get something is the next day.
There are many conveniences of buying merchandise online, but let's face it, there are some things you just can't get online. This is another disadvantage of ecommerce. Also when you buy online you don't have a chance to experience your goods. You just have to trust that you will like what you purchase. Also, you usually have to provide a credit card number when you purchase online. This can be dangerous if you aren't dealing with a totally secure website.
